Viejitos
Frank Devine
It was a beautiful Central California day. I drove up to a stately yellow and white Victorian with an old farm tractor in the front yard and I knew I was in the right place. I was greeted by Billy Aranda, a member of the Viejitos since the chapter began in 1996. Billy says new chapters are being added frequently with chapters in Mexicali and Tijuana Mexico, the US and Okinawa Japan. This culturally diverse car club is one of the most interesting clubs on the Central Coast of California. Ages range from 21 to 57. They are very active, and attend or sponsor numerous events throughout the year.
There is also an amazing amount of talent among their membership. The president, Lazaro Rosas, was on a break from painting a member's '54 Chevy wagon. He has been president of this chapter since 1996. Lazaro also wood grains interior trim and dashboards on early collector cars and trucks. Another prominent member, Simon Serna, is doing a mural in air brush at the presidents home garage. The mural features the old Leo's Diner, the Park Aire Drive-In Theater and Santa Maria Theater; all victims of the wrecking ball and so called progress. The mural also depicts Sammy the Saint, mascot of Santa Maria High School and of course, member's cars! Simon also air brushes on cars and motorcycles. Almost everyone in the club is mechanically inclined; members help each other out whenever possible. Ruben Fabela does detailing for the club.
David Garcia, a founding chapter member, brought his '48 Chevy Pickup and we were privileged to snap some curbside photos of his marvelous beauty. As you can see his truck is in good company; these guys really got it goin' on. Every vehicle is a knock out!
The Viejitos Car Club began in L. A. in 1985, founded by George Luna and "Lobo". The excitement spread internationally and continues to grow. The plaque holder and founder of the Central Coast Chapter is Tony Vasquez, originally from the Oxnard chapter.
He is shown here holding a plaque displayed in the rear window of member's vehicles. Tony has been a member of the Viejitos organization for 15 years.
The Central Coast Viejitos Car Club is a terrific group of fun loving people with spectacular classics cars, family friendly activities and an avid interest their community. So, if you like restored cars, low-riders and cruising events, you'll have a great time with the Viejitos Car Club.
