Cam Twisters

Frank Devine

The Cam Twisters Car Club of San Luis Obispo, California meets at the Budget Cafe' in San Luis Obispo every Tuesday morning, across the street from the DMV on South Higuera Street. traditionally the president changes at will on Tuesday mornings, our own Andrew Blasquez, owner of AutoshopClassics.com attended his first meeting and left the place a bewildered president. We're all used to bewildered presidents in this country so he was perfect for the job. At this meeting, his second, he passed the gavel to Frank Delia. I was told the only rule is there is no rules and once you become a member you're a member for life. Most of these guys are granddads still racing, rodding and cruising like teenagers.

The main topic of discussion on the 23rd of March meeting was a race, with Cam Twisters member John Kerr's third place showing in a field of sixteen. The race took place at Laguna Seca, California Historic Motor Sports association's spring event in Monterey, which was held the previous weekend. John drove a we-bodied upright roadster powered by a 32 Ford B model engine with Miller OHV and Dual Carbs which produced about 150 hp. This was his first race at Laguna Seca since 1958, when he drove a Lotus II.

I went around taking a few photos and the waitress asked me if I'd like her to take one with me in it. I said "Oh no, that's OK, I'm not really with them." She laughed and said "Yea, right. I wouldn't admit to that either!" Then noticing some curiosity, Andrew Blasquez announced that I was covering the Club meeting for this article. He introduced me and said "Frank is building a '37 Nash Coupe." The room roared with laughter and gasps of "Oh my God!" One member exclaimed "Hey Man, that's the only way you CAN get out of this club!" We all had a good belly buster over that.

These guys are a good humored, friendly bunch, with horse power on the brain and a blue oval Ford emblem branded on their ass. Pure unadulterated Hot Rodders. With show and go, these guys have some truly dynamite street rods. Anyone interested in joining the club can call Frank Delia for information at (805) 528-2873. The Cam Twisters get two thumbs up from AutoshopClassics.com.
